April 1987 e.v. at Thelema Lodge

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

Announcements from
Lodge Members and Officers

This Month at Thelema Lodge

April is an important month for Thelemites throughout the World. On the 8th, 19th and 10th, we celebrate the Three Days of the Writing of the Book of the Law. In 1904 e.v., Crowley and his first Scarlet Woman, Rose Kelly, spent some time in Egypt, a night in the Great Pyramid of Cheops and three days of intensive transcription of Liber AL vel Legis. The result was Thelema, the philosophy and religion of Will, in which a Divine star is held to burn uniquely and compatibly in each person. "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law." That is the primary statement. It means different things to different people, but to most it signifies something a bit like destiny and a bit like freewill all in one. No one can tell you what your Will is. You can only discover it for yourself. At that, Will is not desire or even inclination. It is probable that most people go through life without ever comprehending this essential and Divine Will. It is not to be found in the myriad of likes and dislikes, demands and protest that compound daily life. It is essential Life, Love and Liberty. One person's true Will cannot conflict with any other's. The illusion of such conflict is explained as confusion of the small for the Great. Moments exist when we are aware of who we are, why we exist and, most importantly, what we are doing here. In those moments, the True Will can become consciously apprehended. At all other times... "Love is the law, love under will.
Not everyone believes in gods and goddesses, and the language of Liber AL vel Legis may seem strange. No one may authoritatively interpret it for anyone else, because we are all different. Even from one moment to the next, our needs change in ourselves. The human consciousness is limited and circumscribed. It is a window on a greater Universe. Sometimes deities are seen through the window, at other times demonstrations of logic or atheist philosophy. All prophets are true, and all philosophy, and all religion. The window of the soul shows views more often than panoramas. Gods and goddesses dwell in that universe where one can say "there is no god where I am". It is the law to give. The story is in The Equinox of the Gods. The philosophy is in Liber OZ. The sacred writing is Liber AL itself. Join us in the San Francisco Bay area on the three days for a celebration and reading of the three chapters. By local tradition, we do this at three separate places each year. In this way uniqueness of meaning is symbolized, and no single view has a chance to dominate. In this Law is Truth, yet only to be seen through the eyes of each one. You can see as much in any dew-drop on any flower. For Thelemites, Liber AL is both the Token and the Type of this mystery. It is our Sacred Book not because others are not sacred, but because it is the shining light on the flower we behold in the eternal morning.

The various classes and rituals continue at Thelema Lodge in April: Tarot, Enochiana, Egyptiana, Gnostic Masses, Initiations and more. See the calendar for dates, times and phone numbers to call. Our classes are free, but your donations help keep them that way.

Grand Lodge News:
Historic Bylaws Meeting

On the 21st and 22nd of March, the time of Thelemic New Year, IXth Degree members of O.T.O. met in San Francisco to consider new Bylaws for the O.T.O. in the USA and the beginnings of a general plan for International reconstruction of the Order. The new Bylaws were provisionally accepted after two days of exhausting work in the Sanctuary. Here are some of the highlights and points of interest:

For Members from Minerval through IVth Degree, except for initiators, no immediate changes. This phase of the reconstruction of the O.T.O. was largely complete under the previous Caliph. As the middle Degree bodies activate, there will be some impact on the Man of Earth Degrees, but much of what is coming will take the form of gradually improved performance in areas already laid out. Initiators will be receiving instructions and new forms for reporting, as a result of enhancement of the role of Grand Secretary General. New procedures will come from the Electoral College (USA) or the Grand Secretary General by proper notice. Until then initiators should continue to report as before. It is intended that the Initiation Secretary at the JAF 7666 Box in New York act as a central receiver for such reports, but business as usual is the watch-word if there is any unanswered question of what goes where.

Above IVth Degree, a major effort is underway to accelerate compliance with Crowley's design for O.T.O., as manifest in the Blue Equinox. Nearly all of the various administrative and governmental bodies related to these Degrees have been described and mandated in the new Bylaws. Their full implementation will wait on adequate membership in these Degrees, but the IXth Degree will be filling VIIIth Degree commitments in part as of now. Until the intermediate degrees fill in a bit more, the new Supreme Council will oversee some of the business appropriate to them. In implementing the Blue Equinox, financial matters were felt to change too much with time and place to justify activation of the 1919 e.v. practices. Crowley was a mystic and a genius, but he was always the first to admit that money management lay utterly beyond his competence. Vows of poverty and operation of loan and living services are really outside the present goals of the O.T.O. There are serious considerations of Thelemic independence of individuals, legal limitations and capital funds that make these and some other ideas of communal finance inappropriate for the foreseeable future. Profess Houses and similar institutions of retreat will someday be implemented on a voluntary basis.
There have been major changes in the highest councils of the O.T.O. The Supreme Council is no longer elected every two years, and is now composed of three members instead of seven. It has been re-named "National Supreme Council", and is presided over by a National Grand Master who has powers of appointment and removal of the other two members of this body. These other two officers remain the Grand Secretary General and the Grand Treasurer General, although the prefix "National" might be appropriate in some circumstances. In addition to these three, there is a fourth officer, also appointed. This is the Deputy National Grand Master, and his duties are to fulfill the role of the National Grand Master under certain circumstances and subject to certain limits as a sort of vice-president. The National Grand Master is Hymenaeus Beta, the Caliph. The GTG and GSG offices are still being filled by the same individuals. International implications will be addressed briefly below. The Supreme Council has effectively been redefined along the lines of the 1917 e.v. O.T.O. Constitution from the Th. Reuss days.
IXth Degree voting franchise has been transferred to the VIIIth Degree Areopagus, with the proviso that any IXth Degree can enter this body through right of demand. In effect, one individual O.T.O. member gained the vote, and no one lost it.
USA is a temporary base, as far as the international direction of O.T.O. is concerned. Under the new Bylaws, the USA National Grand Master is only acting O.H.O. for the international O.T.O. until more Xth Degrees can be established elsewhere. These Xth Degree National Heads will be appointed by the Caliph when appropriate. As soon as the minimum number of five Xth Degrees is reached, those Xth Degrees can call for election of the full Outer Head of the Order. They may delay if they see fit. In the mean time, the Caliph is the acting O.H.O. and at least for the present, also the USA Xth Degree. Because of the role of IXth Degrees from the McMurtry years in electing the present Caliph, the original IXth Degrees who participated in that election have the power to remove and replace this acting O.H.O. There are additional details, but that is the basic situation at present.
On the whole, each succeeding year has seen improvement. Many of the limitations put on the past Caliph were not so much constraints on him as protections for him. Grady McMurtry skillfully used "the rules" to avoid undue pressure and to insure a successor. With a younger Caliph and the progress made in the last 10 years, it's definitely time to take some of the canvas covers off the throne. I have been the architect of much of what has been set up in the last few years. I support the new Bylaws, and the restoration of national office. These Bylaws are an experimental model for other lands. After a period of review and correction, the Bylaws will be made available to those who need to study them. Later this year the European theater will have IVth degrees, and regional coordination is likely to be set up by then. While the USA O.T.O. works the kinks out of intermediate degree governmental bodies, international O.T.O. members will be promoted on merit to advance adoption of these same levels outside the USA.

Bill Heidrick,
Grand Treasurer General
for the USA
and acting GTG
for International O.T.O.

In the Continuum.

In the Continuum is now entering upon its 14th year of publication with Vol,. IV, No. 1, for the Spring Equinox of 1987 e.v. We have been printing articles, poems and letters by Crowley which are either difficult to find or which are essential to a basic understanding of Thelema, or which have never been printed before. The policy of this publication is to make easier for the student the study and practice of Thelemic principles. We have also been writing a history of the beginnings of the Thelemic movement through the history of Jane Wolfe, who studied with the Master Therion for 3 years in Cefalu and was associated with him and working for him for another four years in Tunis, England & France. When Jane Wolfe returned to America, she was still working for the spread of Thelema and there are many letters between her and Crowley and Karl Germer which give insights into the history of the Movement and also insights into how Crowley wanted people to work with the O.T.O. and Thelema in general.

In the Continuum is packed full with articles on Ritual, Philosophy, Psychology, Thelemic History, Poetry, Qabalah, Tarot, Astrology and much more. It is a good idea to collect all the issues, as much of the material by Crowley and others is serialized. There are 10 issues in Vol. I, 12 issues in Vol. II, 10 issues in Vol. III. Each issue is $4.00 payment with order, and this sum covers the expense of mailing. Please make checks payable to Phyllis Seckler. Write to P.O. Box 415, Oroville, CA 95965

Ancient Ways Festival

On the Next Page, there is an notice and application for the Ancient Ways Festival. This is not an O.T.O. sponsored event, but definitely worth your while. The Thelema Lodge Calendar is happy to bring you information about the pagan community in general. If you have an event or something else of interest to our readers, please call (415) 454-5176 or drop in at the lodge before mid-month to make arrangements for a notice in this publication. No charge.
